Orthodox goods in South Africa: what we found

Orthodox Africa is a community project for Orthodox Christians in Southern Africa. Before opening a full online shop, we are studying what Orthodox goods people in Southern Africa can actually find, what they pay for them, and what is missing.

This page is that research. It is not a shop yet. Everything below is what we found.

There is no single Orthodox shop in South Africa. You can still find some items, but separately, and never in one place: local church candles, imported icons, and occasionally second hand goods. The products people ask for most, Orthodox holy water and Orthodox incense, are the ones that are hardest to find.

Across everything we looked at, the same things came up again and again as hard or impossible to find: Orthodox holy water, Orthodox incense, censers, candle holders, Orthodox candles made locally, and well presented, properly packaged Orthodox goods. Almost everything we found was unbranded, with plain packaging. For a believer these are not ordinary goods, and we intend to do this part properly.

Icons & Crosses

Looking for Orthodox icons and crosses in South Africa? Icons of Christ, the Mother of God and the saints, cross necklaces and devotional crosses. Most icons come through intermediaries who import from America or Greece, with delivery of 10 to 20 days, and second hand icons appear from time to time on informal marketplaces.

Prayer & Worship

Orthodox candles, candle holders, incense, censers and holy water in South Africa. We could not find a local producer of Orthodox candles, and no single place in South Africa offering Orthodox holy water. Orthodox incense and the equipment that goes with it are practically impossible to find.

Books

Orthodox prayer books, Bibles, children's books and lives of the saints in South Africa. Our research found that they are not carried together anywhere: there is no single shop in South Africa where these are available in one place.

Gifts & Devotional Items

Orthodox prayer ropes, bracelets, cross necklaces and keychains in South Africa. Devotional items are not carried together anywhere, and there is no single shop where an Orthodox Christian can find them in one place.
